What is the Shared Charging Project?

The Shared Charging Project allows homeowners with electric vehicle (EV) chargers to share their chargers with neighbors and other EV drivers. This turns their homes into accessible charging hubs, promoting sustainable transportation and fostering community.

How can I participate in the Shared Charging Project?

Homeowners or business owners with an EV charger can sign up to share their chargers with neighbors and the wider community. Once registered, your charger will be listed on the EasyGo platform, where EV drivers of your choice can easily find and access it. The host can choose the times and hours that the charger is available for the public.

Do I need a driveway to participate in the Shared Charging Program?

It's not strictly required, having a private parking space is typically preferred. Keep in mind that on-street charging installations may be possible but could be subject to planning permissions and local regulations, which could limit the suitability of these locations for the program.

What does the home charger look like?

The charger is a compact, discreet ABB unit designed to blend seamlessly into residential environments.

What if someone overstays their time on my charging station, using it as a cheap parking spot?

Homeowners participating in the Shared Charging Program are responsible for managing their own property. To address overstaying, a surcharge is automatically applied once charging is finished, which helps to discourage overuse.

How does the surcharge work for overstays?

If someone exceeds the agreed charging time, the system automatically applies a surcharge. This ensures that the charging spot is used fairly and discourages abuse of the space. Max penalty is €25.

How does sharing my charger helps me?

By sharing your charger, you can generate additional income by renting it out when it’s not in use. You will also contribute to the growth of sustainable transportation options and strengthen community bonds.

How much can I earn from sharing my charger?

The amount you can earn depends on how often your charger is used and the rates you set.

Is there a platform to find available chargers?

Yes, the project provides a platform (EasyGo – the largest private EV charging network in Ireland) where EV drivers can easily search for and access your home/business chargers.

How do I ensure my charger is available for others to use?

Once you sign up for the project, you will have the ability to set availability times and dates for your charger. You can make it available when it’s not in use and adjust the schedule as needed.

Do I need to keep the app active or open during the pilot?

No. While the pilot runs for 12 months, you decide when your charger is available and to whom. However, as the goal of the project is to gather data, we encourage you to use the charger as much as possible.

Will sharing my charger increase the risk of damage or misuse?

The platform is designed with security features to ensure safe use. You’ll be able to set your own charging rates and availability times. Additionally, you will be able to monitor usage through the platform, offering peace of mind.

What are the environmental benefits of this project?

By increasing the availability of EV chargers, the project promotes the adoption of electric vehicles, reduces carbon emissions, and encourages sustainable transportation options within the community.

How does this project help my community?

This project strengthens community bonds by encouraging neighbors to support each other. It also makes EV charging more accessible, particularly in areas with limited charging infrastructure.

Can I participate if I don’t use my charger frequently?

Yes! If you don’t use your charger often, you can still participate by making it available when it's not in use. This helps improve charging availability for others and creates an additional source of income for you.

Can I participate if I don't own an EV?

Absolutely! You don’t need to own an EV to participate. If you have a driveway, or if you own a small business, Airbnb, or B&B, you can install an EV charger and make it available to the community. This is a great opportunity to provide a valuable service to EV drivers and generate additional income.

What are the requirements to join the Shared Charging Project?

To participate, you must be a homeowner or business owner with an EV charger (meeting the required specifications) or have the ability to install one. Once registered on the platform, you can begin sharing your charger with others.

What are the requirements for an EV charger to be eligible for hosting?

To participate, you’ll need a home charger. If you already have one, the EasyGo team will

upgrade it for free. If not, you can get the specific home charger approved by EasyGo installed at no cost. These chargers are required because they can share key charging details — like energy used (kWh), pricing, and charging time — for both your car and others. This gives you full visibility into each charging session.

Does my house need internet or mobile signal for the charger to work?

Yes. The charger must have access to Wi-Fi, 4G, or 5G to enable communication with the EasyGo platform. In areas without reception or connectivity, such as remote villages, functionality may be limited.

What about insurance? Am I covered if something happens while my charger is in use?

As with everything in Ireland, each car owner, homeowner, or business owner is responsible for their own insurance. This means the vehicle owner is accountable for any damage to their car, while the homeowner or business owner is responsible for their property. We recommend that everyone makes sure they have the right insurance coverage for both their vehicles and property to keep things hassle-free. Units are untethered, and users are responsible for plugging and unplugging their own cables.

Does standard public liability insurance cover this for businesses?

Businesses must confirm with their broker or insurer that their public liability policy covers the use of EV charging points made available to the public..

How will I receive payment for the charges?

Each user will pay directly for their own car charge through the platform. The payment will be processed automatically, and you’ll receive your earnings through your preferred payment method, typically monthly, from EasyGo.

Do businesses need a three-phase electrical connection to participate?

No. A single-phase supply is sufficient for participation.

Do I need a smart meter or night-rate electricity?

No. These are not required to join the project.

Does EasyGo offer discounted electricity rates to participants?

No. Participants manage their own energy supplier and rates.

What happens if the charging equipment breaks?

Participants can contact EasyGo customer support. The equipment is covered by a 2-year warranty and support is provided for the duration of the pilot.

Can I manage my charger directly through the app?

The app is fully managed by EasyGo. However, hosts can set their charger’s availability (days, times, and users), which offers full control over when and how their charger is accessed.

Is there branded signage to stop non-EVs from parking in the charging spot?

No signage is provided, but charging can only be activated via the EasyGo app, meaning unauthorised users cannot initiate charging.

How can businesses prevent regular cars from parking in reserved EV spaces?

Businesses can install optional signage indicating the space is for EV charging only. App-based access and staff awareness further help ensure proper use of the space.
